How long have you been playing disc golf?

2 years

How did you get your start in disc golf?

My husband Scott asked me to come play. Because I love the outdoors, competition, staying active, and most of all spending time with him... it was a no-brainer. To be honest, I wasn't automatically hooked. Starting out I was using what Scott had in his bag which consisted of mostly of over stable discs (meat hooks). With very little distance and having to throw 2-3 times to reach a single throw of the guys around me were making was discouraging. But, once I got to pick out my own discs (all under stable and under 168) and started throwing them more, my confidence, enjoyment, and my distance started to grow. Now... I genuinely love disc golf!

What do you love most about the sport?

I love getting to grow my own skill level, so I can compete. I've always loved sports, the outdoors, and being active. With disc golf I get to enjoy all of those things. Most of all...I LOVE that Scott and I have something active that we can enjoy together again. Disc golf has given my husband the ability to enjoy life more; something beyond his daily debilitating back pain; which makes me happy! Disc golf is a huge blessing to my life and to my family!

What makes disc golf better than the other sports you have played?

It's a sport that most anyone can do. I can do it with my family and friends - beginners to pros. I love the community! It's like a big supportive family full of the best people out there.

How do you approach a new course?

With excitement and compassion. I like to dive in, check out all the lines, and soak in the whole experience. The compassionate side of me knows not worry about the score. I know that my score won't be the best and that's okay. I'm usually kind of excited to set my initial score (no matter how bad I think it is) because I know that it will be a fun challenge when I get to come back and do better.

What motivates you to continually improve your game?

I enjoy growing in all areas of my life. I want to see just how far I can go in everything that I do. Disc golf is no different. I'm naturally competitive with myself so being able to measure myself against other talented athletes during tournaments really helps feed that part of me. Also, being able to level up in skill is an amazing feeling.

What do you do to stay focused playing in tourneys?

I remind myself to stay in the present moment. I try to focus ONLY on the shot that I'm taking. Not how many throws I've taken or what my score will be after the hole is played...just the moments that involve my current shot. A great tip that I was once given was to give myself no more than 5 seconds of reflection after each shot. Whether that be disappointment, adjustment, or a moment of celebration, after the 5 seconds is over move on to the next shot. My goal for every shot is to get the disc as accurate and as close to being in the basket as possible - every time. As I'm taking my shot I focus on the wind, my form, my follow through, the beautiful nature around me, and my breath.

What’s your most memorable win?

Taking 2nd place in my second tournament: Chick Flick - Goin' Global + WGE

What’s your most memorable disc golf moment?

The first time that my disc took the exact line that my mind had imagined. It felt magical!

What are your top three favorite discs?

I have a number of favorites and they seem to change as my game changes, but for now I'd have to say the Westside Discs Hatchet for my driver, the Innova Mako 3 for my straight mid shots, and the Latitude 64 Zero Hard Pure for my putter.

What are your top three courses you have played?

I like more technical courses with trees:

1) Pier Park DGC - Portland, OR

2) The Highlands Course at Horning's Hideout - Northplains, OR

3) Camp Taloali DGC - Stayton, OR

If you could play any course in the world, which would it be?

The Redwood Curtain at Humboldt State University, CA.

Who is your disc golf hero, and how were you influenced be him or her?

I think anyone that's out there bettering themselves in a positive way is a hero.

Whats in the bag?

I have a very mixed bag and mostly on the under stable side. In addition to my top 3 discs above I also carry: Innova: Teebird, Star Leopard, Lisa Fajkus Shrike & Nate Sexton Firebird. Latitude 64: Bolt & Diamond. Dynamic Discs: Breakout Lucid. Discraft: Mantis, Zombie Glow & Sir Headrick's Music Discraft Buzzz. DGA Proline: Tremor MidRange. Finally, my newest favorite is my Team Prodiscus Flipperi that was given to me as a gift by Viktor Jonsson. :)

What non-disc golf hobbies do you have?

Helping to build FlighTowel, yoga, meditation, gardening, and writing.

Any superstitions you have before or during a round?

When I find that I'm missing putts I will take my putter and run it through chains of the basket at the end of that hole to "help remind my putter where it should be going next time".

What does #NoBadRounds mean to you?

Every round is a chance to have fun, challenge myself, and to get in touch with nature. There are no bad rounds. Every opportunity to play for me is a blessing.

What do you love most about your FlighTowel?

It's straight up the most absorbent towel that I've ever used for disc golf. It really helps me to warm up before my rounds and helps me to get re-aligned with my form and grip during the game when needed. I love that I can just slip the fob into my waistband and go. Then, it's with me the whole round, easy to reach for, and easy to use.

Is there anything else you would like to add to your Team FlighTowel profile?

If you're just getting started... I would encourage you to throw discs that work for you, and don't worry about your distance or how you stack up against anyone else. Just go out, spread your wings, and let yourself have some fun!
